The Geneva Elementary School
Kindergarten through Grade Five

In Geneva’s Elementary School, each student develops a deeper knowledge and understanding of God, basic academic skills, and continued character development. Along with the fundamental principles of Language, Mathematics, Science, History, Latin, Bible and the Fine Arts, students learn to listen well, think critically, read with comprehension, write clearly, and speak convincingly. Our literature-based curriculum establishes a strong foundation in the humanities and employs the traditional subjects of phonics, punctuation, penmanship and formal grammar. Each student’s progress is assessed formally three times a year.
Elementary School Curriculum

In the Elementary School, Geneva students focus on the acquisition of skills and solid understanding in the areas of mathematics, reading, spelling and grammar. This is accomplished through worked examples, regular individual practice, drill, and chants, corresponding to classical methods suggested for the “grammar” stage of knowledge acquisition. In addition to these basic skills, students will begin an exciting and comprehensive study of world and American history, beginning with New York state history in Kindergarten and Grade One; moving to Ancient History in Grades Two and Three, and finishing with European and Early American history in Grades Four and Five. In the Elementary School, in addition to a survey of the Old and New Testaments, the students will focus on the Gospels and the books of the Early Church. Character development and spiritual growth are emphasized through discussion and weekly chapel. The students are exposed to wonderful works of classic and modern children's literature through both classroom and assigned individual reading. They continue their studies of French vocabulary and grammar, and their curriculum is enriched through art and music classes each week. These academic studies are rounded out through regular athletics. The Elementary School students participate in many field trips through the year, allowing them to take advantage of the cultural richness of New York City. These destinations include museums, performance venues, parks, and science centers.
