Grammar

Key text is Shurley Grammar, Level 6.

Spelling and Vocabulary

Key texts are Wordly Wise and Spectrum 6.

Literature

Study of master poets, including Longfellow and Wordsworth, and great American novels such as Johnny Tremain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Little Women.

Writing

In Writer's Workshop, students learn to compose both Persuasive and Narrative Essays, as well as a Biography, Historical Fiction, a Speech, and a Civil War Poetry Book.

Latin

Introduction to Latin using Cambridge Latin Minimus and Secundus.

Math

Saxon Math Level 7/6 with a transition to Singapore Math Primary Math U.S. Edition Level 5A and 5B in Fall 2011.

Science

Purposeful Design, Level 6 is key text. Lab-based, hands-on, experiential learning covering the subjects of energy, heat, electricity, magnetism, space, chemical changes in matter, cells and diseases, plants and ecology.

History and Geography

Students engage in a full study of American History from the Age of Exploration through the Civil War. Geography of North America is covered in detail, including the fifty states and capitals.

Bible

Continued study in the New Testament, covering Acts to Revelation.

Music

Students explore music theory through basic chord progression and harmonic function. In addition, they explore music of many countries around the world in a more concentrated and focused fashion.

Visual Arts

Emphasis on drawing people from multiple views and angles and working to refine proportion. Students learn values and shading and continue their study of major artists and art history.

Physical Education

Focused training in skills, rules, and strategy of key sports (basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, Ultimate Frisbee and badminton).
