Geneva's Middle School
Grade Six through Grade Eight
In the Geneva Middle School, the program continues to build on the advanced competencies and depth of cultural literacy achieved by Geneva students in the lower grades in Language, Mathematics, Science, History, Latin, Bible and the Fine Arts, with the addition of Formal Logic. Study in Latin and the Classics continues, with all students reading such significant primary sources as Homer, Virgil, and Dante. In-depth textual and thematic studies of the Bible build on the foundation laid in the Lower School. Through classroom work and extracurricular activities, Geneva prepares students not only for the academic opportunities still to come, but also to eventually serve the world through their character and leadership. Each student’s academic and developmental progress is assessed formally three times a year..
Middle School Curriculum
By Grades Six, Seven and Eight, students trained at Geneva have a solid understanding of the fundamentals of Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Grammar, and a rich background in Literature, History and Biblical Studies. With this academic bedrock they are ready to begin additional studies of Latin.
In Middle School the students concentrate on Algebra and more advanced mathematical and logical concepts, enabling them to deepen their studies of science in Physics and Chemistry. They will finish their study of American History in Grade Six and then revisit Ancient Civilizations and European History at a deeper level in Grades Seven and Eight. As they mature and make more connections among History, Art, Music, and Literature, they will enter into intensive structured writing workshops in which they learn to formulate and present convincing opinions and logical arguments about these and other topics.
The Middle School students will complete another cycle of Bible Study during this three-year period. Character and leadership are emphasized more than ever in the upper grades, with special workshops and lectures in which they are presented with thought-provoking topics for debate. Geneva students are trained in the skills of public speaking. Under the guidance of their teachers, the Middle School students will each research, write, and present a relevant scriptural teaching to the student body at Friday chapel. In addition to academic challenges, Middle School students continue to develop their fitness and sports skills through regular athletics, and continue their studies in Art and Music.
