Grammar
Text is Shurley Grammar, Level 2.
Spelling and Vocabulary
Text is Wordly Wise 3000.
Reading
Emphasis is placed on reading for information, identifying main ideas and themes within a text, and using context clues to discover word meaning. Students read classical texts, including Little House in the Big Woods, Charlotte's Web, and Sarah, Plain and Tall.
Writing
In Writer's Workshop, students will recognize and write Strong Sentences and Strong Paragraphs, a Research Report and a Three-Paragraph Essay. Students show fluency in writing the Friendly Letter, as well as drafting and revising a Short Story and poetry.
Math
Text is Singapore Math Primary Math U.S. Edition Level 2A and 2B.
Science
Text used is Purposeful Design, lab-based, hands-on, experiential learning covering the subjects of energy, electricity, magnetism, space, mixtures, plants, and ecosystems.
History and Geography
Focus is on the history of Ancient Egypt. Students learn the geography of Northern Africa and key places of the region, such as the Nile River and Sahara Desert and their locations on a world map.
Bible
Students begin year one of their two-year study of the Old Testament with focus on Genesis through Joshua. Weekly Bible verses are memorized.
French
Text is Alex et Zoé et Compagnie by CLE International.
Music
Students continue to build upon the elements presented in First Grade, learning more complex rhythmic and melodic elements. They develop their understanding and usage of the musical staff, which allows them to become more proficient in written notation of music.
Visual Arts
Students learn how to incorporate light, colors, and perspective into drawing.
Physical Education
Students learn basic skills of seasonal sports and play lead-up games to train in seasonal sports.
