Grammar
Key text is Holt Grammar and Composition.
Spelling and Vocabulary
Key text is Wordly Wise.
Literature
Emphasis on classical American and British literature, including poetry by Browning, Poe, and Frost. Students engage in a thorough discussion and understanding of classic novels such as A Christmas Carol, Around the World in Eighty Days, and The Call of the Wild.
Writing
Emphasis on increased sophistication in all genres of writing, including persuasive writing, personal narrative, poetry, research report, and fantasy.
Latin
Text is Cambridge Latin, Unit 1.
Logic
Logic is the art of reasoning well. Using various resources, students are trained to think through logic puzzles and scenarios to make deductions.
Math
Primary text is Saxon Algebra 1/2 with a transition to Singapore Math: Primary Math U.S. Edition Level 6A and 6B in Fall 2012.
Science
Prentice Hall Life Science is key text, emphasizing lab-based, hands-on, experiential learning.
History and Geography
Students study American History from Reconstruction to the present. Included is study on World War II and the Civil Rights movement. Study of geography covers the United States and all World War I and II countries.
Bible
Students begin Christian Studies I, reading all major Bible stories up to the time of Judges, memorizing key events and weekly Bible verses. Students begin their study of Church History as well.
Music
Sixth Grade students have an arsenal of musical elements at their fingertips. Throughout the year, they listen to, play, and sing examples of the major works of Western music history. Students utilize their musicianship skiills to improvise and compose their own pieces in the style of various composers.
Visual Arts
Students complete compositions and drawings demonstrating varied elements of art and the principles of design. They learn to incorporate warm advancing and cool receding tones in their work.
Physical Education
Focused training in skills, rules, and strategy of key sports (basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, and badminton).
